June: Mostly work, sleep and frustration.

July: Rearranging furniture at home while waiting for the right weather: sunny, clear weather, to do some video shooting. That didn't happen too many times.

Week in the turn of the month: Thought process, try-and-learn some new stuff, great time with a friend, Assembly summer 2009.

August: Mental hangover in sunny but way too humid weather.

Now I'm back in work with new title: Project manager. Work is pretty much the same than before, but title suits better than IT-specialist. So what did I learn or achieve this summer other than an update to my work title? Two things.

The foremost thing is that it is more fun and more rewarding to do things together with someone consistently minded person than doing things alone. Yeah, I know, there is nothing new in this statement, but you can read more from Random stuff, because I share same opinion.

The other thing was BUGro, Short film for Assembly Short Film competition. It placed 4th in the compo. Read the BUGro making of part I, part II and part III from Random stuff.

Model Expo and old videos

Last Friday (April 3rd) I visited Model Expo at Helsinki Fair Centre. It was nice trip with my family. Lots of model trains, r/c cars, planes, boats and other stuff. I also met some people from Palikkatakomo (forum for Finnish Lego enthusiast) on their booth and talked with them.

Janne Kortelainen, who is a part of HOViNET team, told me that LeGorso and LeGorSIKA were the movies which encouraged him and his brothers to start making brickfilms. After HOViNET started to release their movies in the Internet, many others have followed them in Finland. And thanks for all this go to my friend Lauri Mäki, who asked me in the beginning of year 2000 to make LeGorso with him.

After Expo I thought again (I have thought this for years already), that maybe I should release hi-quality versions of our brickfilms. Although they are not the first Finnish Lego animations, they are probably one of the most well known (at least Finnish version of Wikipedia mentions LeGorso). So here they are:

LeGorso

LeGorSIKA - trailer

LeGorSIKA

Btw, LeGorso contains never before released remixed audio with proper sound effects. Enjoy!

How hard can it be

Have you ever watched Top Gear? If not, it's a humorous BBC television series about motor vehicles, primarily cars. In the show, there is often some odd challenges like "How hard can it be to build stretch limousine", "How hard can it be to present a drive time radio show" or "How hard can it be to drive car to north pole". Some of the challenges end up somehow disastrously.

Over the last few weeks I have thought how hard can it be to create, write and update a homepage or blog. It's such a simple task: 1) choose CMS or blog engine, 2) create layout, 3) write a few pages and that's it. Or is it?

1) The Internet is full of free CMS or blog engines. And almost all of them are based on same philosophy: The more the merrier: Features, features, features... But I don't want features, I want simple content management. So I wrote it: Three small php-functions, about hundred lines of code in total.

2) Layout is often bonded to CMS or blog engine you are using. In some cases it's quite hard to customize it. On the other hand there are also many free layouts which you can use, although the basic structure is rarely individual. This current layout is fourth iteration of my 5-year-long though process. It has some flaws, but I like it.

3) But then there is the main thing: Content. Why am I creating homepage? What I want to say? Have I anything to give to audience? Who is my audience anyway? And in the name of privacy, what I am revealing about me and my personal life to the world?

So how hard can it be? Content is the key! After that, only time will tell if your website or blog is great success or another disaster.

Massive update or not

As I write last time (about four and half years ago), here might be something new this year.

I got bored. I thought that I should make new layout etc. It was year 1999. Finally today I deleted
my old pages. At current speed here might be something new in year 2009.
